Co-Founded and Launched International Website for Nonprofits & NGOs

Third Sector Connector is an international hub for local nonprofits to connect, share ideas, get tips, and find local resources. Membership is free.



Founded and Launched Consultant Matching Service

Designed innovative web-based matching service that matches nonprofit organizations with consultants and service providers in an eight county region of coastal South Carolina. Service also provides "Thrive! Prize" capacity-building grants to local nonprofits.



Staff Retreat and Employee Satisfaction Survey

Worked closely with in-house planning team to design a web-based employee satisfaction survey and subsequent team-building retreat for the 150+ staff in 16 different clubs. At the retreat, the entire staff developed a new "staff creed" which includes the way that they work with each other, families, and the youth that they serve.



Community Engagement and Executive Search

6-month consulting contract to help open a new National office of the ACLU in South Carolina. Created a web-based survey for members, conducted a series of statewide focus groups with key community stakeholders, evaluated and recommended key program priorities, and then led the search process for the incoming new executive director and staff attorney.



Strategic Planning and Board Coaching

Facilitated full day strategic and half-day fundraising planning session with full Board/staff to establish priorities, build a current year action plan with measurable goals, and create  a timeline with activities and responsibilities.  Also provided ongoing board coaching in a variety of areas on an ad-hoc basis.  Planning elements:


  • SWOT analysis and 2013 visioning
  • Prioritization of key programs
  • Organizational capacity planning
  • Elements of a successful nonprofit
  • Building a balanced fundraising portfolio
  • Creating and measuring program and fundraising outcomes

Board Coaching and Hiring Support

Worked closely with Board of Directors to:

  • Analyze organizational structure, assess priorities, and build mini-plan for hiring
 
  • Create an RFP for consulting support for grant writing, marketing, and event planning
  • Interview interested consultants and recommend top-tier candidates
  • Successfully negotiate consulting contracts
 

Planning and Leadership Recruitment

Engaged for a number of key projects at this community-based health center. Key Projects:


  • Developed annual and capital budget and pro-forma
    5-year projections for $3 million expansion
  • Facilitated leadership retreat to develop shared vision, goals, and 3-year priorities
  • Led successful executive search for new Chief Executive Officer
  • Provided executive coaching for clinical leaders and senior managers
  • Wrote several large grants, developed capital campaign tools, and provided strategic guidance to fundraising/development team
  Educating Tomorrow’s Nonprofit Leaders
  Created new curriculum and taught graduate nonprofit management course for MBA students. Curriculum highlights:
  • History of the Third Sector: How Nonprofits Differ from Business Sector and Government
  • The 1st M : Mission (and Vision)
  • The 2nd M: Management (and Governance)

  Helping Small Nonprofits Flourish
Developed and presented a fundraising and donor development training for organization participating in CCF’s
  N.E.W. Fund as part of a leadership training program for grassroots neighborhood groups in 4 counties throughout coastal South Carolina. Content included:
  • How to Identify Potential Donors and Donor Groups
  • Developing and Practicing the Elevator Pitch
  • Using the 3 H’s of Fundraising: Head, Heart and Hand
  • Using Data and Facts to Close the Deal


  Increasing Capacity Through Senior Leadership
Seven-month in-house management consulting contract providing interim management and consulting support during
  vacancies in Executive Director, Development Director, and Grantwriter positions at this professional orchestra with 46 full-time musicians, 7 full-time administrative staff, and a $2.8 million operating budget. Major accomplishments:
  • Ended the fiscal year in the black after several years of threatening deficits
  • Partnered with the Catherine French Group to recruit and hire new Executive Director
  • Successfully negotiated 5-year collective bargaining agreement with musicians’ union
  • Conducted a community-wide unmet needs survey and used data to drive new marketing and sales strategy
  Boldly Setting A New Course for Future Direction
Six-month full-time management consulting contract to
re-open agency and re-launch programs.
 
  • Led local Board through intensive agency planning process resulting in new program direction
  • Designed and conducted a community needs assessment, focus groups, and an environmental scan to support strategic program recommendations
  • Recruited new executive leadership to move the agency forward
  • Designed and launched new Working Opportunities for Women (WOW!) program to help low-income women enter the workforce
  • Converted paper-based accounting system to QuickBooks and provided tactical support for two-year audit
